Welcoming Remarks
by Dr. Dino Patti Djalal

Thank you for visiting the website of Indonesian Next Generation Journalist Network on Korea. I am delighted to build this partnership between FPCI and the Korea Foundation to develop a network of Indonesian journalists who will be exposed to Korean affairs and Indonesia-Korea relations. COVID-19 has accelerated the multipolarity of world order, which has provided a greater impetus for middle powers like Indonesia and South Korea to play a more active role in world affairs. Indonesia and South Korea are now bound by a special strategic partnership. It is certain that the two countries will become even closer ahead through stronger diplomatic, economic, social and cultural interactions. After all, there is no political or historical baggage between Indonesia and South Korea. As our partnership grows, and as fellow democracies, the media play an important role in shaping perceptions and policies on both sides. Therefore, it is important to have a growing pool of dedicated Indonesian journalists who understand Korean issues, and who comprehend South Korea’s vision, strategy and challenges. The power of their pen will certainly enrich the context as well as the content of Korea-Indonesia relations in all its dimensions.

Salam,
Dr. Dino Patti Djalal,
Founder and Chairman of FPCI

Program Overview

The Indonesian Next Generation Journalist Network on Korea is a platform for aspiring professional journalists in Indonesia to gain deeper insights on Indonesia-Korea relations that are still less touched on due to limited access to information.

In 2025, the program will bring together ten (10) selected journalists to participate in a substantive and capacity-building program. Journalists will take part in a series of workshops in Jakarta, where they will have the opportunity to engage in in-depth discussions with Indonesian and Korean scholars, policymakers, and practitioners. The program will allow the journalist to spend a week-long visit to Korea at the end. During the program, journalists are encouraged to enter the public discourse through article analysis publications. The objective is to improve Indonesians’ understanding of Korea by incorporating a discussion on Korean Affairs and Indonesia-Korea relations into public discourse. This year, the program will also feature a series of capacity-building workshops aimed at equipping and strengthening the selected journalists with relevant skills in the field of journalism.

The objectives of this program are:

  1. Strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea by leveraging the role of the media in increasing public knowledge and understanding of Korea in Indonesia;
  2. Provide journalists the time and resources they need to obtain a thorough understanding and relevant knowledge of Indonesia-Korea-related issues;
  3. Facilitate an open and constructive dialogue between Indonesian Journalists and Korean experts or practitioners;
  4. Establish a pool of committed Indonesian Journalists with a shared interest in Korean Issues.

What the Journalists Think About the Program

“This program, including the visit to South Korea, really broadened my knowledge about the country in many aspects - from the policy and the people to the most well-known K-pop culture and gastrodiplomacy. It was such a valuable experience to join the program. I am so sad that my journey ended and now an alumna, but I look forward to seeing the network grow bigger with many more journalists contributing. Kamsahamnida!”

“Being a selected journalist in the “Indonesian Next Generation Journalist Network on Korea” gave me many new perspectives on South Korea and Korean Peninsula issues in almost every aspect. For a journalist who focuses on international affairs like me, this program enriches my understanding of the dynamics of South Korean socio-economic and politics which is rarely found in the daily news.”

“I would say that the Indonesian Next Generation Journalist on Korea is a complete package of a short course. This program helped me understand Korea better and deeper in every aspect, such as inter-Korean relations, Indonesia-Korea's cooperation, and the contribution of Korean pop culture to its economic growth, among many others.”
